Uniswap V4 Launch Depends on Ethereum’s Cancun Upgrade and Audit Completion

Uniswap Labs has provided further details regarding its highly anticipated v4 release, which is currently in active development. In a recent announcement, the team behind the (DeFi) platform Uniswap outlined that the launch of the new version hinges on three key milestones.

Provided there are no security issues or delays regarding the Cancun hard fork and the audit process, V4 is expected to launch later this year.

Updates on Uniswap V4

According to Erin Koen, governance lead at the Uniswap Foundation, the first step in the timeline was the publication of the protocol code, which was completed on June 13. This move involved opening the protocol repository for public viewing and contribution, highlighting Uniswap’s commitment to decentralization.

A critical factor for V4’s launch is the completion of the audit process, which relies on the successful integration of EIP-1153 into Ethereum’s Cancun upgrade. This upgrade is anticipated to take place at the end of September.

Following the Cancun upgrade, developers will focus on an extensive auditing phase for the v4 codebase before deployment. This process is estimated to last between one and four months. However, Koen noted:

“The above timeline is purely indicative and it should be noted that the Cancun hard fork could be delayed, the audit process could be extended, and the protocol could be subjected to other security testing.”

What’s New in V4?

The V4 upgrade aims to expand the decentralized exchange’s (DEX) coin-swapping capabilities by introducing “hooks” and custom liquidity pools. Uniswap Labs CEO Hayden Adams described hooks as “plugins to customize how pools, swaps, fees, and LP positions interact.”

This new functionality seeks to implement features such as on-chain limit orders and dynamic fees—features commonly found on traditional exchange platforms but difficult to implement in a blockchain environment without centralized infrastructure. Additionally, the cost of creating pools on Uniswap v4 will be reduced by 99%, as all pools will reside within a single contract.
