Trump messed it up again: the crypto market rally was short-lived

Opinion: International tensions persist, Donald Trump continues to clash with the Ayatollah’s regime, leading to the US Federal Reserve’s refusal to cut interest rates. Amid these events, have chosen to exercise caution.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin’s price remained virtually unchanged from March 13 to March 20, 2026. Nevertheless, it would be incorrect to claim that the leading cryptocurrency was in a state of stagnation. On Tuesday, March 17, during trading, Bitcoin reached a level above $76,000—a sight not seen in the last month and a half. This was followed by the expected decline.

On March 18, the US Federal Reserve held a new meeting on the key interest rate. Fed Chair Jerome Powell announced that the rate remains at 3.5–3.75%. He believes there is no stagflation, as the unemployment rate is near normal, and inflation exceeds target values by only 1%. However, the situation in the Middle East has driven up oil prices. Powell expects higher inflation by the end of the year: 2.7% instead of the previously forecast 2.4%. Although the Fed still considers a scenario with a single key rate cut in 2026, the probability of this occurring in the first half of the year remains low. Crypto investors were not enthusiastic about Powell’s speech, which was reflected in Bitcoin’s drop below $70,000.

Pressure on the largest cryptocurrency by is also exerted by the conflict between the US and Israel and Iran. A new stage involved Iranian military attacks on the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Qatar, as well as Israeli bombings of the South Pars field in the Persian Gulf. This led to a significant increase in energy resource prices. The cost of gas in European countries increased by a quarter, and Brent oil approached $120. In conditions of uncertainty, investors prefer to avoid assets with high volatility, such as cryptocurrency.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded fund inflows for the fourth consecutive week. This time, the inflow amounted to $147.28 million. Positive dynamics were largely driven by BlackRock’s fund, iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which was replenished by $236.58 million. Other ETFs mainly recorded fund outflows.

From a technical analysis perspective, Bitcoin’s trend has finally changed to an upward one. At least, this is confirmed by the price exceeding the 50-day moving average (marked in blue). However, the Money Flow Index (MFI) indicates a possible price decline, at least in the short term, as the indicator has moved down from the overbought zone (above 80). Support and resistance levels on the daily chart are $59,930 and $74,434, respectively.

The Fear and Greed Index decreased by four points compared to last week, down to 11. Extreme fear still predominates in crypto investor sentiment.

Ethereum

Ether increased by nearly 3% from March 13 to March 20. The price of the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization exceeded $2,150. At the same time, over the past seven days, ETH traded even higher: on March 16, the price exceeded $2,300 for the first time since February 3.

Analysts from the CryptoQuant platform noted that the number of margin positions on the crypto exchange Binance reached 75%. In March, this was the only platform that managed to fully recover after the collapse that occurred in October. The exchange reserve constitutes about 3.4% of the total ETH supply. CryptoQuant analysts believe that recent price changes are largely determined not by the spot market, but by the derivatives market.

This has its pros and cons. On the one hand, markets dominated by margin trading can extend trends. On the other hand, even minor events can trigger large liquidations and a drop in ETH value. CryptoQuant analysts advise caution when trading ether.

Meanwhile, representatives of another analytics platform, growthepie, noted that the number of Ethereum (L2) solutions has decreased from 108 to 100 over the past eight months. New projects are appearing, however, the number of those that complete their operations exceeds the number of new ones. growthepie analysts also noticed a consolidation in the number of applications receiving transactions. In March, their number was 490, which is less than the 2025 peak of 639. Nevertheless, growthepie is confident that there is nothing to worry about, and consolidation is a natural process.

Spot ETH ETFs have recorded fund inflows for the fourth consecutive week. This time, the inflow amounted to $118.44 million. The majority of the sum, $64.17 million, fell to BlackRock’s fund, iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA).

From a technical analysis perspective, the ether trend is upward. This is confirmed by the price exceeding the 50-day moving average (marked in blue). Additionally, the VI+ line (purple) of the Vortex indicator exceeding the VI- line (pink) favors the bulls. Support and resistance levels on the daily chart are $2,150 and $2,386, respectively.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) together with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) published an explanation on March 17 regarding which cryptocurrencies should be classified as digital commodities. A crypto asset is considered a commodity if its value is based on the programmable work of the ecosystem and the balance of supply and demand, rather than on expected profit. The document lists 16 digital assets that fall under the definition of “non-security.” One of them is Dogecoin. Thus, in disputed situations, the largest meme coin will be regarded as a digital commodity.

Billionaire Elon Musk once again drew attention to DOGE. He posted a video created using artificial intelligence (AI), where he portrays the character Vito Corleone from the movie “The Godfather” and delivers a monologue:

“You came to me on doge’s wedding day and asked me to give you the private key. Can you be considered a friend? You didn’t even think to call me doge’s father.”

The video attracted attention and gathered over 52.5 million views, 14,000 reposts, and 140,000 likes.

However, activity around spot DOGE ETFs was zero last week. Investors did not replenish these exchange crypto funds, which interrupted the two-week streak of inflows into spot DOGE ETFs.

From a technical analysis perspective, Dogecoin has been in a sideways movement for a month. The price of the largest meme coin by market capitalization fluctuates between the support level of $0.088 and the resistance level of $0.106. It should be noted that the initiative currently belongs to sellers. The price is located below the 50-day moving average (marked in blue), and the RSI indicator has dropped below 50.

Conclusion

The past seven days were marked by almost zero dynamics in the largest cryptocurrencies. The main factors influencing crypto investor sentiment remain the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions and the ongoing military actions of the US and Israel against Iran.
