Ethereum Faces Sandwich Attacks: Can Solana and Cardano Outpace ETH?

- Ethereum competitors are exploring new strategies to surpass ETH.
- Ethereum is experiencing significant bot activity and sandwich attacks.
Ethereum (ETH) originally emerged to offer smart contract functionalities that the Bitcoin network could not support. Since then, Ethereum’s competitors have risen to provide alternatives to its lingering issues, though they have not yet succeeded. However, Ethereum is currently facing new challenges due to the rise of “Bots and Sandwich Attacks.”
So-called “Ethereum killers” may pride themselves on having novel ideas. Yet, until now, most of their success has been largely attributed to the limitations of the second-largest blockchain network in the world. These competitors have made unexpected progress in their quest to outperform the top smart contract blockchain by offering worthwhile trade-offs.
However, Ethereum retains many advantages. Competitors such as Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), and Polkadot (DOT) have not yet beaten Ether. Since its inception, Ethereum has experienced a wave of massive adoption, powering the development of “Decentralized Finance” (DeFi) and forming the vast majority of decentralized applications (dApps) in the ecosystem.
Bots and Sandwich Attacks on Ethereum
Recently, there has been significant bot activity on the Ethereum network. A type of front-running attack known as a “Sandwich Attack” is used by MEV (Miner Extractable Value) bots to surround a target trade with two other trades to profit from the price discrepancy.
According to data from EigenPhi, MEV bots on Ethereum set a new record over the past month, profiting $1.035 million through 11,640 transactions. Currently, Sandwich bots are grabbing newly issued meme tokens, such as Pepe (PEPE) and Chad (CHAD). These currencies, which have no intrinsic value, attracted Crypto Twitter attention overnight, leading to a 10,000% increase.
Due to increased transaction costs and congestion brought on by MEV bots and sandwich attacks, Ethereum’s network may become slower. As a result, the overall effectiveness of the network as well as the user experience may suffer.
However, the widespread use of Ethereum has proven to be a “bittersweet development.” On one hand, this growth encourages innovation and draws users to the crypto space, enabling the realization of new ideas.
