Debates are escalating among U.S. government officials regarding proposals to eliminate the Federal Reserve System. This is attributed to a potential clash with the White House.

Jerome Powell, the Chair of the Fed, stated at a press conference that he would not resign if requested by Donald Trump, who is set to take office as U.S. President on January 20, 2025. He also emphasized that the White House lacks the authority to dismiss him, according to BBC reports.
During his previous term as president, Trump contemplated dismissing the Fed chair due to a rise in the key interest rate. While campaigning for the 2024 election, he informed Bloomberg that he would permit the Fed chair to finish the term, provided the policies were in line with his perspectives. Jerome Powell’s tenure as Fed Chair is scheduled to conclude on May 15, 2026.
Nonetheless, Trump has consistently expressed that the U.S. President should exert greater control over the Fed. This has led to speculation about Trump potentially pursuing Powell’s ousting, prompting reporters to inquire about the issue. Powell’s reply elicited varied reactions.
Specifically, Mike Lee, a Senator from Utah, in response to Powell’s comments, publicly suggested dismantling the Federal Reserve System, arguing that it is incompatible with the U.S. Constitution because “the Executive Branch should be under the direction of the president.” This notion also received backing from Elon Musk, who is anticipated to be part of Donald Trump’s administration.
Two days following the U.S. election, the Fed reduced its key interest rate, which CP Media reported in relation to Bitcoin’s all-time high.
