According to Bloomberg, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York found SBF guilty on all counts and sentenced him to 300 months in prison, equating to 25 years. The prosecution sought a sentence of up to 50 years for the former FTX head, while the defense argued for a lighter sentence of up to six and a half years.

SBF will serve his sentence in California, where parole is not available. He may be eligible for early release for good behavior after a few years.

During the proceedings, Judge Lewis Kaplan highlighted that SBF was convicted of perjury and providing false testimony. Sam Bankman-Fried plans to appeal the decision. He expressed remorse for his actions; however, the judge dismissed his claims of regret, pointing out that the defendant had no intention of pleading guilty. The judge also indicated that the former CEO of FTX would be required to pay a fine of $11 billion. Matthew Lee, the Founder of Inner City Press, released a comprehensive transcript of the hearing.

The cryptocurrency community perceives the judge’s sentence as overly lenient, considering that the maximum potential sentence for the charges was 110 years.

SBF’s former associates pleaded guilty in December 2022 and have been cooperating with the investigation, including testifying against the former head of FTX. Nonetheless, they are also facing multiple legal challenges, with former executives from FTX and Alameda Research accused of orchestrating the largest financial fraud in history.
