Near the city of Yegoryevsk in the Moscow region, law enforcement discovered an underground mining operation. It was revealed that a local pensioner was mining cryptocurrency on his property.

The site housed over 30 ASIC miners. The mining activities resulted in losses for neighboring residents, as the increased energy consumption caused network overloads, leading to voltage fluctuations in nearby homes and damaging household appliances, according to police reports.

The elderly miner, aged 68, was apprehended by police in collaboration with FSB officers. The property is located in the village of Pochinki. In addition to the cryptocurrency mining equipment, authorities seized two routers, a laptop, a mobile phone, and eight fans from the elderly resident of the Moscow region. The man is facing charges for causing property damage exceeding 4 million rubles, as stated by Tatyana Petrova, head of the information and public relations department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Moscow region.

A criminal case has been initiated against the pensioner under the article “causing property damage through deception or abuse of trust” (Article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). During the investigation, the man has been placed under house arrest.

Currently, a proposal to completely ban mining in Moscow and the Moscow region is under consideration by the Russian government.
