Developers at Polygon Labs are preparing to introduce an AggLayer solution next month, which will facilitate the creation of aggregated blockchain networks by merging distinct protocols across various layers without the necessity for bridges.

Polygon Labs developers disclosed the upcoming launch of AggLayer, a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) solution designed to enable the consolidation of different blockchain networks into a unified framework.

With AggLayer, developers will have the capability to establish aggregated blockchain networks, making interactions as straightforward for end users as using the Internet. Polygon developers described aggregated blockchains as a progressive advancement, as the aggregation process can merge:

  • the independence and of a modular architecture;
  • the consolidated liquidity and user experience of monolithic systems.

ZKP is fundamental to AggLayer, facilitating the formation of integrated aggregated environments that will function as a single blockchain. However, ZKP will allow each blockchain within this ecosystem to maintain its sovereignty.

Among the advantages of aggregated blockchain networks, representatives from Polygon Labs emphasized the following:

  • nearly instantaneous atomic transactions (in under a second);
  • the establishment of a unified liquidity pool within the ecosystem, accessible to all L2 solutions linked to AggLayer;
  • enhanced capital efficiency due to the capability for seamless cross-network transactions;
  • significantly improved user experience as the network evolves into a singular environment that eliminates the need for bridges.

AggLayer V1 is set to launch in February of this year. The initial version of the software will include a fundamental set of tools for consolidating bridges and a shared proof aggregator for participating chains. AggLayer V2 will follow later and will accommodate asynchronous cross-chain transactions. Currently, the Polygon Labs team is concentrating on beta testing the solution.

Scalability continues to be one of the most critical challenges facing contemporary blockchain networks. In 2023, the Polygon Labs team made significant strides in this area by developing the Chain Development Kit (CDK) and Polygon ID, along with the announcement of Polygon 2.0.
