Metaverse Presents Both Benefits and Risks for Young Users
Researchers affiliated with a European Union government think tank assessed the advantages and disadvantages of children engaging with virtual reality, concluding that Metaverse technologies can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on youth.
Maria Niestadt, an Analyst at the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), asserts that virtual environments can foster children’s creativity and enhance their motivation to learn. Based on Maria’s research, Metaverse technologies may also assist in the treatment of specific childhood ailments.
For instance, the EPRS posits that virtual realms can be utilized for diagnosing and addressing various mental and physical disorders in children, including autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Virtual environments can also promote healthy habits, help children confront their fears, or support physical rehabilitation.
Analysts also express strong support for the educational opportunities presented by Metaverse technologies. According to the EPRS analysts, immersive learning experiences within virtual spaces positively influence children’s social interactions. Metaverses offer children cultural and social experiences.
Conversely, the EPRS analysts express concerns regarding the adverse effects of children’s use of Metaverse technologies. The report primarily highlights the physical and psychological impacts associated with children’s use of VR headsets. Extended use of virtual reality goggles can lead to dizziness, nausea, anxiety, and fear in children more frequently than in adults. Ongoing engagement with the Metaverse may result in social isolation, and children might also face harassment and bullying in virtual environments. The EPRS analysts emphasize that issues surrounding children’s safety and privacy in virtual spaces remain particularly significant.
Previously, concerns regarding children’s safety in virtual environments were also raised by participants at the World Economic Forum. In Japan, Metaverse technologies are being actively employed to inspire students, and higher education institutions in Asian countries are integrating virtual reality into their educational frameworks.
