MetaMask Introduces ‘Transaction Shield’ Subscription With $10,000 Loss Guarantee

4

MetaMask launched a paid security subscription named “Transaction Shield” on Tuesday, promising to refund users if its threat detection mechanisms fail. The service is priced at $9.99 per month and provides up to $10,000 in coverage for transactions that the wallet incorrectly classifies as “safe.”

The feature addresses the anxiety associated with signing malicious contracts—a vulnerability that has drained millions from users, as demonstrated by a victim who lost over $3 million in August 2025. The “Transaction Shield” operates on a straightforward principle: if the system approves a transaction but funds are subsequently stolen, MetaMask covers the loss.

The Fine Print – What Is Not Covered by the MetaMask Transaction Shield?

The coverage is specific. It applies to assets lost during the interaction itself, such as a drainer contract disguised as a mint. It does not cover:

  • Compromised Keys: If a user loses their seed phrase or falls for a phishing site that steals credentials, the payout is zero.
  • Protocol Hacks: If Aave or Uniswap are exploited after a deposit, MetaMask is not liable.
  • Market Volatility: Slippage and price crashes are the user’s responsibility.

Coverage is capped at $10,000 per month across 100 eligible transactions. Claims must be filed within 21 days, with payouts settled in mUSD within approximately 15 business days.

Market Context

The service supports major EVM chains, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Base. It is currently available only on the browser extension, with mobile support pending.

This move signals a pivot for wallet providers from passive tools to active, paid guardians. By monetizing security, MetaMask creates a recurring revenue stream while addressing the primary barrier to entry for retail capital: the fear of the “Sign” button.
