Manchester City FC Introduces NFT Initiative for Supporters
Alongside digital collectibles, supporters of Manchester City can acquire distinctive physical memorabilia and exclusive experiences, such as team training sessions, in the form of NFTs.
Officials from Manchester City have revealed a collaboration with the NFT platform Quidd, which is a subsidiary of Animoca Brands. This partnership is set to last for several years and will focus on the creation and introduction of digital collectibles, promotional activities, and the arrangement of unique experiences for fans of the club.
In the NFT format, there will be limited edition digital collectibles, including tokens that provide access to real-world experiences. For instance, supporters can participate in a team training session at the City Football Academy, with seats located right next to the playing field. The organizers assure additional “money-can’t-buy experiences.”
Furthermore, fans will have the opportunity to purchase unique collectible NFT player cards, with the first edition, comprising 200 tokens, set to be released on May 2. Additional digital rewards and benefits will also be accessible to all, including the chance to obtain unique physical memorabilia and official club merchandise, tickets, exclusive game access, and more.
It is important to mention that this is not Manchester City’s inaugural Web3 initiative. On April 22, the club launched the NFT collection “Unseen City Shirts” on the crypto exchange OKX. Each token corresponds to shirts from the limited release “The Roses and the Bees” collection, with each item hand-painted by artist Christian Jeffrey. Earlier in 2022, the club entered into a three-year agreement with Sony to recreate the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City’s home ground, within the Metaverse.
The utilization of Web3 technologies across various aspects of football club operations has been evolving for several years. In 2023, FC Barcelona secured $132 million to advance its Web3 initiatives. The previous year, Chinese tech firms developed a Metaverse project that enabled football fans to view live broadcasts of FIFA 2022 World Cup matches in a virtual environment.
