In a post shared on X, Buterin detailed a series of modifications he has made across his devices to lessen dependency on centralized, data-heavy services.

Vitalik Buterin Substitutes Google and Telegram with Privacy-Centric Options

He mentioned that the initiative began in 2025 when he nearly completely switched to the open-source, encrypted, and decentralized document platform Fileverse, which is said to be a privacy-oriented alternative to Google Docs.

Around the same time, he indicated he had opted for Signal as his primary messaging app, moving away from Telegram.

Signal provides end-to-end encryption by default for all conversations and retains minimal metadata, while Telegram only encrypts messages in optional so-called secret chats.

He further noted that Telegram stores messages and metadata on its servers, a structure that has garnered increased scrutiny due to a rise in law enforcement requests in certain areas.

The modifications made in 2026 involved more extensive changes, stemming from those initial adjustments.

Buterin asserted that he replaced Google Maps with OpenStreetMap, utilizing Organic Maps on mobile devices, pointing out the benefits of local and offline usage that minimized the amount of location data sent to external parties.

He also transitioned from Gmail to Proton Mail, highlighting encrypted messaging as a stronger tool for secure communication.

Simultaneously, he mentioned that he has begun prioritizing decentralized social media and is still exploring the concept of running large language models locally, rather than relying on cloud-based AI services.

Buterin Envisions Local AI as the Future of User Privacy

The reasoning behind these choices is not rooted in ideological purity but practicality, as Buterin explained.

He believes it is unnecessary to transmit vast amounts of personal information to centralized services, as there are tools available to reduce this exposure.

He acknowledged that local AI systems still face usability and integration challenges, especially concerning translation, transcription, and document search, but remarked on significant improvements over the past year.
