Iranian officials are broadening the pilot initiative for the central bank digital currency (CBDC), with the digital rial now accessible in the Kish Island free economic zone.
The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has revealed the extension of its CBDC pilot program, which is centered on domestic micropayments. Limited public trials of the digital rial will occur in the Kish Island free economic zone, in partnership with Mellat Bank and Tejarat Bank.
Throughout the pilot phase, the Iranian digital currency will be available to clients in the banking sector as well as tourists. The digital rial can be utilized for the purchase of goods and services, necessitating users to download a designated digital wallet and scan a specific QR code for transactions.

The digital rial will act as an additional payment option alongside cash and bank cards. In contrast to other types of electronic money typically utilized in the nation, CBDC transactions do not require interbank settlements; funds are exchanged directly between buyers and sellers.
