Ron DeSantis Announces Presidential Bid, Vows to Protect Bitcoin
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially announced his entry into the 2024 U.S. Presidential race, positioning himself as a formidable opponent to former President Donald Trump within the Republican primary.
Unlike Trump, DeSantis has a history of supporting pro-crypto policies and is a staunch opponent of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).
DeSantis Would Protect Bitcoin
DeSantis announced his candidacy during a Twitter Spaces session with platform owner Elon Musk on Wednesday. Musk has expressed regret over his support for Joe Biden in the 2020 election and noted his lack of interest in Trump, preferring a “normal person for president.”
Both Musk and DeSantis share common ground in their opposition to “woke” ideology and their support for free speech. They are also both crypto-friendly, contrasting with Trump, who has repeatedly referred to Bitcoin as a “scam.”
When asked about the regulatory landscape for crypto in the United States, DeSantis stated that citizens have “every right to do Bitcoin” and pledged to oppose any legislation banning its use.
“As President, we’ll protect the ability to do things like Bitcoin,” DeSantis said. “I just do not have the itch to control everything that people may be doing in this space.”
DeSantis echoed sentiments from other crypto-supportive Republicans, arguing that the Biden Administration is stifling the U.S. crypto industry through aggressive regulation. Following a series of enforcement actions by regulators against exchanges, stablecoin issuers, and crypto-friendly banks, companies like Coinbase are seeking clarity on the rules governing crypto in the United States.
“The current regime – clearly they have it out for Bitcoin, and if it continues for another four years, they’ll probably end up killing it,” he added.
At Bitcoin Miami 2023 last week, Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged to protect citizens’ “inviolable right” to hold and use Bitcoin. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is also a Bitcoin advocate, believing it offers advantages over the fiat currency system.
No CBDCs for DeSantis
In contrast, the Biden White House has expressed interest in implementing a potential CBDC to “bring the U.S. financial infrastructure into the digital era… without the risks or irrational exuberance brought by crypto assets.”
Similar to Republican Congressmen Tom Emmer and Ted Cruz, DeSantis is firmly opposed to CBDCs. In March, he introduced legislation to ban such technology from being used in Florida.
“I see it as a massive transfer of power from individual consumers to a central authority, and I don’t think that’s good for a free society,” he said.
