BIS Advocates for Oversight of Metaverse Advancements
Analysts from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) have determined that the Metaverse technology sector is characterized by a lack of systematic growth, resulting in heightened competition. Consequently, there is a necessity for regulation to avert potential fragmentation and the dominance of large private firms.
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) released a report that investigates the future of Metaverse technologies and the economic implications of utilizing virtual environments. The primary conclusion reached by the analysts is the imperative to implement regulation within the sector.
The study’s authors highlight that advancements in the Metaverse sector are somewhat disorganized, and the ambition of large private enterprises to dominate virtual environments contributes to intensified competition. Consequently, concurrent advancements in a highly competitive landscape may lead to fragmentation, undermining the core principles of the Metaverse.
The BIS analysts have urged regulators to acknowledge the potential advantages of Metaverse technologies and to establish a legal framework for sector regulation. The authors of the document also called upon central banks to create regulated payment systems that would mitigate the risk of large private companies exerting control over the financial elements of Metaverse initiatives.
The analysts further observe that, despite the rising interest in Metaverse technologies, the widespread adoption of virtual reality-based projects remains in its nascent stages. Nevertheless, immersive technologies hold the promise of reshaping the global economy. Specifically, Metaverses could reduce the geographical basis for pricing certain services, encourage international geographic integration, and alter the labor market.
Recently, Chinese authorities have engaged in discussions regarding the necessity of regulating user interactions in Metaverses with representatives from the public sector and major businesses.
