Argentinian Bitcoin NGO Calls for Relaxation of Strict Cryptocurrency Exchange Regulations
Regulations surrounding cryptocurrency exchanges are “distorting” and making the Argentinian sector “inefficient,” according to a prominent Bitcoin advocacy organization.
Bitcoin Argentina, one of the leading pro-crypto advocacy groups in the country, expressed these views in an official statement released on December 4.
The NGO asserted that the National Securities Commission (CNV)’s requirement for all crypto exchanges to register and disclose client information contradicts the policies of the “libertarian” President Javier Milei.
Crypto Exchange Regulations Impede Argentina’s Progress, NGO Asserts
Earlier this year, the CNV began overseeing exchanges for the first time, mandating compliance with regulations that are now standard in Western Europe, North America, Japan, and South Korea.
However, Bitcoin Argentina contended that the CNV’s new registration system is introducing “distortions and inefficiencies” into the crypto landscape.

The NGO argued that the regulator should abandon its policies and “limit its focus” to combating “money laundering.”
The CNV has committed to establishing the registry, requiring all “digital asset service providers (PSAVs)” to apply for operational licenses.
Nonetheless, the NGO claims that the regulator is attempting to address non-existent problems “in a sector that currently functions without issues.”

“The current system is not a distant, uncertain, or novel market. It is not a sector in crisis or emergency. It is an established one. And it operates effectively. While the new regulations may benefit certain players in the ecosystem, they will hinder the growth of others. Furthermore, they will not prevent the rise of future scams.”

Additionally, Bitcoin Argentina went further, stating that the regulations also “pose a risk for the CNV itself” and for crypto traders within the nation.
The NGO clarified that this is because it does not “offer enhanced security measures” and “will even create a misleading sense of security and oversight.”
Essentially granting firms the CNV “seal of approval” in “a market that is inherently risky, asymmetric, global, and unmanageable” would be a significant risk, it noted.
“Argentina has a unique opportunity to commit to deregulation and uphold the freedom that has produced such positive outcomes thus far. We could set an example for the rest of the world.”

‘A Burden for Smaller Enterprises’
The NGO’s President Ricardo Mihura expressed his inability to comprehend how the CNV could “deviate from the government’s deregulatory stance and impose an inefficient regulatory burden.”
The NGO also cautioned about “immediate repercussions” for “small enterprises and self-employed individuals,” who may be “driven out of the sector or pushed into illegality.”
“Regulatory expenses” could also hinder “new” Argentinian crypto initiatives in the future, Mihura pointed out.

Rodrigo Andragnes, the NGO’s founder, asserted that the CNV should “take the necessary technical time to evaluate whether regulating PSAVs truly benefits the community.”
Crypto adoption has surged in Argentina in recent years, with an increase in stablecoin and Bitcoin purchases.
IMF Involvement?
Many believe that the CNV’s crypto exchange regulations were designed as a gesture of goodwill to the International Monetary Fund, which has previously raised concerns regarding the country’s lack of crypto regulation.

However, the media outlet c5n reported that the new registration system has generated “criticism within the cryptocurrency community.”
Some have even “questioned President Milei’s stance” for “allowing such regulation.”
Milei has previously expressed support for Bitcoin. Additionally, the CNV has conducted several BTC adoption-themed meetings with its counterparts in El Salvador.
It has also suggested a more lenient approach to crypto by participating in local crypto summits.
Earlier this year, Vice President Victoria Villarruel engaged in BTC-themed discussions with El Salvador’s leader Nayib Bukele.
