Japan’s MUFG Bank Eyes Role of Stablecoin Issuer for Third Parties
- MUFG is in discussions with numerous partners about utilizing its Progmat blockchain.
- Legislation has been established in Japan to encourage the usage of stablecoins.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc (MUFG), Japan’s largest bank, is negotiating with global stablecoin issuers to create their tokens on its own blockchain network.
Additionally, Japan’s stablecoin legislation, which allows licensed banks, trust companies, and authorized money transfer agents to issue these cryptocurrencies, came into force on June 1. This law facilitates the issuance of stablecoins pegged to international currencies, such as the US dollar. MUFG is reportedly in discussions with numerous partners regarding the use of its blockchain platform, Progmat.
In the crypto market, stablecoins serve a crucial function as a safe haven for investors’ funds, particularly during transactions involving more volatile tokens. Stablecoins are digital currencies designed to maintain a consistent value, often by being anchored to the US dollar and backed by fiat currency or other assets. The total value of stablecoins in circulation is currently approximately $130 billion.
No Plans of Releasing Own Stablecoin
As stablecoins have gained prominence, regulatory oversight of the industry has increased. Japan has established legislation to encourage the use of stablecoins, which are digital currencies that are 100% backed by fiat cash in a stable, transparent currency.
Tatsuya Saito, MUFG’s Vice President of Product, stated that the Japanese banking giant is considering a scenario where its Progmat platform could be used to issue security tokens on behalf of third parties. At this time, there are no plans to release its own stablecoin.
Currently, MUFG is holding conversations about stablecoins with many companies in Japan, including financial institutions and entertainment firms. Saito noted that inquiries are pouring in from foreign financial institutions as well. Consequently, Japan may emerge as a leading issuer of stablecoins.
