Yuga Labs ApeFest Participants Report Serious Eye Problems0

  • ApeFest 2023 took place in Hong Kong from November 3 to November 5.
  • At least 15 reports of vision impairment have emerged online.

The parent company of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), Yuga Labs, organized the highly anticipated return of its major in-person event, ApeFest 2023, held in Hong Kong over the dates of November 3 to November 5.

This year’s event in Hong Kong did not concentrate on music as the previous year’s gatherings did in New York City during NFT.NYC. Instead, the festival emphasized a “new adventure” aimed at encouraging participants to explore the city’s hidden treasures and making the festival accessible to those unable to attend in person.

Severe Discomfort

Nevertheless, multiple attendees at the Yuga Labs ApeFest in Hong Kong reported experiencing burns, vision impairment, and “extreme pain” in their eyes, attributing these issues to the event’s lighting. On November 5, an attendee named CryptoJune tweeted that he had to visit the hospital after waking up in the middle of the night post-ApeFest with severe eye discomfort.

A number of individuals with eye issues were noted to be “up close” to the lighting display on the main stage, as per one witness. Another ApeFest participant, identified only as Feld on Twitter, shared that he encountered similar problems.

At least 15 reports of vision impairment have appeared online, though this may only pertain to those among the hundreds of ApeFest attendees who were positioned very near the stage. Past events in Hong Kong have seen attendees suffering health issues due to poor UV lighting.

The claims of visual impairment in both scenarios are linked to a condition known as photokeratitis, commonly referred to as “Welder’s eye.”
