Gutter Cat Gang NFT Project’s Twitter Account Compromised to Advertise Fraudulent Scheme

- In 2021, Gutter Cat Gang launched with 3,000 unique NFT cartoon cat avatars.
- One individual lost a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT valued at $65,913 based on current floor prices.
A SIM swap attack targeted the Gutter Cat Gang NFT project, resulting in the theft of over $765,000 worth of NFTs. Members of the NFT community highlighted the security incident around 8:00 pm UTC on July 7.
Gutter Mitch, co-founder of the Gutter Cat Gang, issued a warning via Twitter regarding the exploit and advised users against clicking on any links. The Gutter Cat Gang was introduced in mid-2021 with 3,000 unique NFT cartoon cat avatars.
Both Accounts Breached
The official Gutter Cat Gang account and Gutter Ric’s personal account were both breached. The hackers utilized the compromised accounts to disseminate links to fraudulent limited edition Gutter Cat Gang NFT sneakers airdrops, which, when accessed, drained users’ hot wallets.
Additionally, the deceptive links were advertised on Twitter using the current Gutter Cat Gang branding and images from the project’s phygital shoe launch in collaboration with Puma and NBA/Charlotte Hornets player LaMelo Ball.
Moreover, ZachXBT, a prominent blockchain analyst, reacted to Gutter Mitch’s tweet by suggesting that the team had fallen victim to a SIM swap attack and questioned the group’s dedication to data security.
ZachXBT remarked:
“Your team better look at a compensation plan for victims as it is gross negligence to have used SMS 2FA on your socials after all of the recent SIM swaps.”
One individual lost a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT valued at $65,913 based on current floor prices. Another person reportedly lost an astonishing $700,000 worth of NFTs from various blue chip collections, as noted in a separate post by ZachXBT.
