Worldcoin Launches World ID Verification in Austria, Broadened European Operations

The Worldcoin Foundation has announced the launch of World ID orb verifications in Austria, broadening its reach in Europe.

The initiative seeks to improve access to its innovative “proof of humanness” technology within the area, as stated in a blog post released by the company on Wednesday.

The deployment of eyeball-scanning orbs in various sites across Vienna, the capital of Austria, enables individuals aged 18 and older to participate in the Worldcoin network by confirming their unique World ID.

Worldcoin Expands Operations in Europe

Austria’s inclusion in Worldcoin’s orb network follows the example set by neighboring Germany, representing a notable expansion of the project’s operational presence in the European region.

Nonetheless, Worldcoin has faced regulatory challenges throughout the continent, with Spain recently extending its ban on Worldcoin until a GDPR audit is finalized.

In a similar vein, Portugal imposed a temporary halt on biometric data collection by the project earlier this year, reflecting widespread concerns about data privacy and protection.

In light of these obstacles, the Worldcoin Foundation highlighted the favorable reception of its technology among users in Spain and Portugal.

“In a 2024 survey in Spain, 82% of the 21,000 World ID holders who responded agreed that technologies such as Worldcoin/World ID are important for distinguishing between humans and bots online (13% were unsure),” the Worldcoin Foundation stated.

“Likewise, in Portugal, over 3 in 4 (77%) of the 19,000 World ID holders who responded concur that Worldcoin can positively influence their digital interactions (13% were unsure).”

Worldcoin Takes Measures to Address Privacy Concerns

Worldcoin has proactively addressed data privacy issues.

Through initiatives like “Personal Custody,” the project has strengthened its dedication to protecting users’ biometric data, granting individuals more control over the storage and deletion of sensitive information.

Looking forward, Worldcoin’s forthcoming network, World Chain, is set to introduce a new phase of and efficiency for the project.

With a developer preview already made available, World Chain allows developers to test and provide feedback on the network prior to its expected mainnet launch later this summer.

The architecture of the network, based on Ethereum within the Superchain framework, is designed to be permissionless, open source, and governed by the community.

Primarily developed and supported by Tools for Humanity, an organization co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the Worldcoin project operates under the principle of securing the future of the internet by differentiating between human and non-human entities.

By undergoing an iris scan to confirm their humanity, individuals receive WLD tokens associated with their World IDs.

Recently, Worldcoin formed a partnership with the infrastructure platform Alchemy on June 26.

This collaboration will provide Worldcoin developers with Alchemy’s range of tools and infrastructure to construct the new World Chain blockchain.

World Chain will focus on human verification, digital identity, and decentralized applications while maintaining privacy and security standards.
