Worldcoin Adjusts Data Collection Methods in Chile Following Opposition
Tools For Humanity, the entity behind Worldcoin (WLD), will modify its data collection practices in Chile following legal challenges.
The Spanish-language news source Criptonoticias reported that Tools For Humanity will now prohibit “children and adolescents” from providing biometric data in exchange for WLD tokens.

Worldcoin Response: Company to Begin Verifying Ages of Chilean Users
Astrid Vasconcellos, the communications and marketing lead for Tools For Humanity Latin America, stated that the company had “implemented changes” to its operations “in light of criticism and controversy.”
Worldcoin commenced its operations in Chile in July of the previous year, experiencing significant uptake in various regions of the country.
Attorney Initiated Important Case at Appeals Court
Reports indicated “long lines” forming at iris-scanning centers in Chile. However, the company has encountered opposition from the legal sector regarding its choice to permit teenagers to utilize Orb scanners.
This has “ignited a controversy” in the country, the media outlet observed.
Chilean attorney Rodrigo Lagos filed a case at the Santiago Court of Appeals in March after discovering that his 17-year-old daughter was permitted to scan her iris “without parental consent.”
This case emerged amid increasing international scrutiny of Worldcoin’s operations and concerns regarding data privacy.
Regulatory bodies and politicians in Europe, Africa, and Asia have intervened. Additionally, lawmakers in other parts of Latin America have called for regulations concerning Worldcoin.
Consequently, Chilean authorities began monitoring the company in April to “ensure that consumers are adequately informed about how their data will be utilized.”

ID Verification Now Mandatory at Chilean Centers
Nevertheless, Worldcoin seems determined to address these concerns by enhancing its age and ID verification processes. Vasconcellos elaborated:
“Previously, we did not verify the age of [the individuals using our centers]. Now, prior to entering a [center], you must present valid identification. The reason we didn’t implement this earlier is that the fundamental principles of the project include privacy and security.”
Vasconcellos further stated that the firm “didn’t want to mislead people” by “making them think that we were cross-referencing personal data with iris scans.” She added:
“We have recognized that we do need to verify the [age of] individuals who [use the centers]. It is insufficient to take individuals’ word.”

1% of Chileans Have Scanned Their Irises
The company claims that it has successfully scanned “over 1% of the Chilean population.”
Vasconcellos emphasized that the firm does not retain images of the irises it scans, instead keeping individual “iris codes.” She explained that iris images are “automatically deleted.” The Tools For Humanity executive concluded:
“The aim of the project is to establish a humanity base: a network of humans. This will assist in identifying who is human and who is not. There is a significant amount of misinformation regarding our project.”

Company Acknowledges Worldcoin Project Is ‘Complex’
Vasconcellos remarked that “perhaps” some of this was her company’s “responsibility,” as the project is “quite new and complex.”
Opposition to Worldcoin continues on an international scale. In late June, a UK regulator initiated an investigation into the firm’s operations.
However, Tools For Humanity achieved a success in Kenya last month when authorities discontinued an investigation into the company’s centers.
