A group associated with a crypto memecoin has claimed responsibility for launching sex toys onto the court during several WNBA games over the past week, according to a recent report from USA Today.

Crypto Memecoin Group Responsible for WNBA Sex Toy Events

The August 8 report states that an unnamed representative for the memecoin group—known only by the X account @Daldo_Raine—communicated to the outlet that the purpose of these actions is to protest the “toxic” atmosphere within the crypto industry.

The report highlights that the group established Green Dildo Coin as a humorous initiative last month, as smaller participants in the continue to encounter challenges from malicious entities in the digital asset sector.

The coin was introduced on July 28, just one day prior to the first incident occurring at an Atlanta Dream game at Georgia’s Gateway Center Arena on July 29.

Two individuals have been apprehended for throwing sex toys onto WNBA courts. Nevertheless, the group’s representative informed USA Today that their intention is not to insult or demean female athletes.

Backlash Against Sex Toy Stunts

The events have ignited renewed discussions regarding the perception of women’s sports and the treatment of female athletes, especially within the WNBA.

It’s a stretch to argue targeting the WNBA wasn’t strategic and intentional with these recent sex toy-related incidents.

“These women are still the subject of an occasional punchline,” wrote Shannon Ryan, managing editor for women’s basketball at The Athletic, in an article dated August 7. “While players are negotiating for higher salaries, they’re still fighting for their reputations to be respected as elite professional athletes.”

“They have now had to be graceful and coolly navigate being unfairly thrust into an obscene moment,” she continued.

“Everyone’s trying to make sure the W’s not a joke and it’s taken seriously, and then that happens,” stated WNBA player Sophie Cunningham during a recent episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast. “I’m like, how are we ever going to get taken seriously?”
