Who is Christopher Harborne and What Motivates His Donation to Reform UK?

Significant political developments have emerged in Britain, with connections to the cryptocurrency sector.

Right-wing Reform UK has recently received the largest donation from a living individual in history, contributed by a notable crypto investor.

Christopher Harborne is a serial entrepreneur whose considerable wealth is largely attributed to his investment in Tether.

Reports indicate that he holds a 12% stake in the stablecoin issuer, and considering the impressive profits generated by the company, it is reasonable to conclude that this £9m ($12m) donation is relatively minor for him.

But who exactly is Christopher Harborne, and what is the importance of his donation to Reform UK? Let’s explore.

Hey, Big Spender

Harborne resides in Thailand and is also known locally as Chakrit Sakunkrit.

This is not his first foray into political contributions. For several years, he has supported the Conservative Party and previously set records by pledging £1m to Boris Johnson.

However, many of his recent donations have been directed towards political groups associated with right-wing figure Nigel Farage.

In 2019, he made headlines by donating £6m to the Brexit Party. Despite receiving over 644,000 votes in that year’s election, none of their 275 candidates secured a seat in Parliament.

Nevertheless, the tide appears to be turning, particularly after the Brexit Party rebranded as Reform UK.

Fast forward to the 2024 general election, and Reform garnered 4.1 million votes nationwide, ranking as the third-most popular party overall. Despite this, Britain’s electoral system resulted in only five seats out of a potential 650. Farage won one of those seats, marking his first term as an MP.

Furthermore, momentum seems to be increasing. In the local elections held in May, Reform UK outperformed all other parties, gaining control of 10 councils.

Current opinion polls indicate that 31% would support Reform if a general election were held tomorrow, positioning it ahead of all other parties. The Labour Party, currently in power, trails in fourth place with 14%. Should Farage’s party achieve significant success and navigate the first-past-the-post system effectively, there is a tangible possibility he could gain access to Downing Street.

It is not surprising that Reform UK is quite supportive of cryptocurrency.

Reform UK’s Views on Crypto

Nigel Farage has frequently participated in Bitcoin conferences, and in May, Reform UK outlined its cryptocurrency policies in detail.

Among the proposed measures is a flat 10% capital gains tax rate on digital assets, which is significantly more favorable than current rates. Additionally, it would become unlawful for banks to refuse or withdraw services from clients engaging in cryptocurrency transactions, with the tax authorities instructed to create systems enabling Britons to fulfill their tax obligations using digital assets.

In a move reminiscent of Donald Trump, Reform also aims to establish a “sovereign Bitcoin reserve fund,” arguing that this would “diversify holdings, signal confidence in digital assets, and capture potential long-term appreciation.”

The party believes that such a progressive approach could yield a “Brexit dividend” and provide the UK with a competitive edge following its exit from the EU. Naturally, any policy liberalization would also benefit individuals like Christopher Harborne and companies such as Tether.

What This Means

The next general election is scheduled for 2029. Reform UK faces the challenge of maintaining its lead in the polls over the next three years while demonstrating effective governance at the local level.

Regardless of the outcome, early indications suggest that this election may bear similarities to the campaign that led Trump to a second term in the White House. Although the regulations governing political donations differ in the UK, there is potential for the cryptocurrency lobby to rally in support of Reform and channel their substantial resources into this emerging party.

It remains uncertain whether this would suffice for Nigel Farage to become the next prime minister and subsequently advance this pro-crypto agenda. However, with Christopher Harborne’s financial backing and Labour facing challenges amid budgetary fallout, the current political landscape appears to favor him.
