Web3 Application User Base More Than Doubled in 2023
The quantity of decentralized application (dApp) users surged by 124% last year. Web3 applications on blockchain platforms Near, Klaytn, and Arbitrum exhibited the most significant growth.
Throughout 2023, an average of 4.2 million unique active wallets (UAW) engaged with decentralized applications daily, more than doubling the figures from 2022. This information is sourced from the DappRadar report.
The most substantial growth was observed in applications associated with non-fungible tokens (NFT), where the user count increased by 166% over the year, reaching 671,100 daily UAWs. Decentralized finance (DeFi) ranked second in growth rate, achieving an increase of 112% with 934,300 daily UAWs. The SocialFi sector rounded out the top three, experiencing a 29% rise with 250,700 daily UAWs — key protocols in this area included Friend.tech, Lens Protocol, and Galxe.
The GameFi sector led in terms of user activity among dApps, with average daily users hitting 1.1 million UAWs by year-end. Blockchain gaming represented 34% of all decentralized app users in 2023.
The DeFi sector topped transaction volume, showing a 537% increase from 2022. The total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols grew by 77% to $103 billion in 2023.
The blockchain networks that led in user growth among dApps are:
- Near — 1,902%;
- Klaytn — 1,099%;
- Arbitrum — 624%.
Conversely, the blockchain networks experiencing a decline in dApp users include:
- Harmony — 96%;
- Solana — 76%;
- Hive — 68%.
According to DappRadar analysts, a notable trend for 2023 is the reduced demand for Layer 1 (L1) blockchain networks, attributed to the slowdown in on-chain activity observed over recent years. In response, various L1 projects have been relaunched as side-chains or Layer 2 (L2) networks within the Ethereum ecosystem — analysts noted active development in this segment during Q1 2023.
