French officials have initiated a preliminary inquiry into a data security incident at Waltio, a cryptocurrency tax reporting service utilized by tens of thousands of investors.

This incident transpired when hackers allegedly gained access to sensitive user data and attempted to extort the company.

The situation has raised new concerns regarding the vulnerability of personal information within the cryptocurrency sector, as fraud targeting investors and physical assaults against holders are increasingly common in France.

Authorities Connect Waltio Breach to Shiny Hunters’ Extortion Scheme

In a statement made public this week, French cybersecurity agencies confirmed that, through its cybercrime division, the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office had directed the National Cyber Unit of the Gendarmerie to assess the extent of the breach and identify affected users.

Officials warned that users whose information may have been compromised should be cautious of scammers posing as legitimate service providers or other authorities who might pressure them into relinquishing their digital assets using the stolen information.

Law enforcement agencies reported that some recent fraudsters have impersonated cryptocurrency businesses, bank anti-fraud departments, or even law enforcement officials and judges.

French newspaper Le Parisien reported that the assault on Waltio was linked to a ransom demand from a hacking group known as Shiny Hunters.

This group allegedly obtained personal information from around 50,000 Waltio users, the majority of whom are based in France, and claimed to possess samples of the stolen data as evidence.

Waltio subsequently lodged a complaint regarding attempted extortion and unauthorized access to its automated data system.

The company stated that its initial internal review indicated that the hackers accessed tax reports for the 2024 period. These documents contained users’ email addresses, details about crypto gains or losses, and asset balances as of the year’s end.

The firm affirmed that banking information, administrative documents, and tax identification data were not compromised and that its primary infrastructure remained secure.

Waltio also noted that its services are still operational and that client funds are secure.

France Enhances Oversight Following Crypto Data Breach Amid Rising Kidnapping Incidents

Waltio was established in France and is headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand. It caters to approximately 150,000 users and is dedicated to simplifying cryptocurrency tax compliance for European investors, particularly in France, Spain, and Belgium.

The platform consolidates transaction data from over 700 exchanges, wallets, and blockchains to calculate capital gains, losses, and staking income, generating tax-compliant reports for local submissions.

The investigation is being conducted amid increased scrutiny of cryptocurrency-related data breaches in France.

Over the past year, authorities have linked several home invasions, kidnappings, and attempted kidnappings to criminals seeking to exploit knowledge of victims possessing digital assets.

While the data leak has not been directly associated with these crimes, investigative teams have not ruled out the possibility of the data being used to identify potential targets.

Victims of fraud have been advised to preserve evidence, report incidents to the police, and contact the data protection authority in France if they believe their personal data has not been adequately protected.

The Waltio incident is not the first instance of data exposure within the cryptocurrency sector.

Hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger disclosed earlier this month that a breach involving a third-party payment processor, Global-e, occurred, compromising customer data.

Last month, cryptocurrency tax software developer Koinly also informed users of a potential email data breach linked to the use of a third-party analytics platform.
