Vitalik Buterin’s X (Twitter) Account Breached, Notable NFT Allegedly Taken

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain, experienced a hack of his X account that was used to promote a phishing site, which allegedly siphoned off more than $800,000.

The deceptive post has since been removed, and the account has been reinstated.

  • The blockchain security firm PeckShield was among the first to notify the public about the ongoing hack late last night, highlighting the dubious post originating from Buterin’s account. It stated that Consensys had chosen to distribute “commemorative” NFTs to users, who were instructed to follow a link provided in the post.
  • As seen in many prior instances of such fraudulent airdrops, the link directed users to a phishing website.
  • While that post has been deleted and Buterin’s account restored, on-chain investigators indicated that the attack was largely effective.
  • EvanLuthra reported that the total funds lost surpassed $800,000. Furthermore, the first publicly-claimed punk NFT, potentially the first ever minted, was also lost.
  • Changpeng Zhao, CEO of Binance, also commented on the situation, advising his followers to “use common sense” when encountering similar posts that appear too good to be true. He also emphasized the significance of online safety, particularly the use of two-factor authentication (2FA).
