Vitalik Buterin Advocates for Broader Non-Financial Applications of Ethereum

As the New Year approaches, Vitalik Buterin took the opportunity to reflect on his experiences and discuss the foundational vision of the Ethereum network, as well as the impact of the cypherpunk movement on its development. He also encouraged the crypto community to focus on creating non-financial applications.

In his blog, Vitalik Buterin outlined the original concept of the Ethereum blockchain and its guiding principles.

He noted that the inception of Ethereum was inspired by the cypherpunk movement. The blockchain was envisioned as a platform for the secure exchange of private messages and decentralized file storage. Initially, Ethereum was meant to serve as a “public decentralized shared hard drive.” However, in 2017, the emphasis shifted towards financial applications.

Even with the blockchain’s achievements in facilitating various financial applications, Buterin emphasizes the importance of recognizing that Ethereum encompasses more than just profit generation. He highlights that the Ethereum community should prioritize open participation, uphold the network’s resistance to censorship, and aim for neutrality.

In this context, Vitalik expresses hope for the advancement of non-financial applications on the Ethereum network. He believes that the principles and ideas of cypherpunks should remain relevant. Ethereum developers are actively working on technologies that align with cypherpunk ideals, including zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), rollups, second-generation privacy solutions, account abstractions, and more. These innovations could serve as the foundation for new applications on the web that do not focus on financial objectives.

Vitalik asserts that the Ethereum community should remember the core principles of blockchain networks, which consist of seven key points:

  1. Open global participation. Anyone worldwide should have the opportunity to engage as a user, observer, or developer in the ecosystem on an equitable basis.
  2. Decentralization. Applications should remain operational even if their primary developers are no longer involved.
  3. Censorship resistance. Centralized entities should not be able to interfere with users or applications.
  4. Auditability. Any user should have the ability to verify the mechanisms of the application.
  5. Credible neutrality. The foundational infrastructure should be neutral and independent of the credibility of its developers.
  6. Shared ecosystem. All applications should interact within a broader open ecosystem.
  7. Cooperative mindset. All projects within the ecosystem, despite competition, should collaborate on software development, research, security, community building, and more.

According to Buterin, if the community fails to adhere to these essential principles, there is a risk of losing the unique value of the Web3 ecosystem in the coming years, potentially leading to the creation of a more modern version of Web2.

Previously, Vitalik Buterin addressed the risks associated with “stretching” Ethereum’s consensus and expanding the mainnet’s functionality.
