Visa Enhances Access to Adaptable Payment Credential Technology
Visa Flexible Credential (VFC), which was initially accessible solely to Olive card users in Japan, is now broadening its reach to include the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
Visa has formed a collaboration with debit card provider Affirm and digital banking institution Liv to enhance the geographic distribution of Visa Flexible Credential.
This technology allows payment card holders to alternate among various payment methods, such as debit or credit options, reward points, different types of installment payments (BNPL), and multi-currency transactions, all through a single credential.
Affirm will incorporate the capabilities of Visa Flexible Credential into its Affirm Card, enabling users to make purchases instantly or opt for installment payments. Affirm cards are utilized by 1.4 million individuals in the United States.
Customers of Liv Bank in the UAE will have the ability to switch between multiple currency accounts when processing payments with a single card, facilitated by Visa Flexible Credential. Initially, this solution will accommodate five currencies: the U.S. dollar, Canadian dollar, British pound, Australian dollar, and euro.
The press release indicated that the Visa Flexible Credential solution was previously limited to Olive Card users in Japan, where it is issued by Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company Corporation (SMCC). Since its introduction just over a year ago, more than 3 million Olive Card users have utilized the technology, accounting for 70% of the total.
Visa and SMCC also introduced a new feature aimed at assisting small businesses in obtaining credit and enhancing cash flow. For instance, Olive cards enabled small business owners to seamlessly switch between business and personal accounts.
The practical application of Visa Flexible Credential in Japan has paved the way for its introduction in additional markets. Company representatives intend to further broaden the technology’s availability on a global scale.
Visa is also actively endorsing cryptocurrency payment initiatives. For instance, FV Bank has recently launched crypto-ready debit and corporate cards in collaboration with Visa. These new cryptocurrencies will facilitate the use of digital assets for everyday transactions alongside fiat currency.
