As advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) continue to evolve, there is an increasing apprehension regarding the possibility that these developments may surpass the capabilities of their creators.
Matt Clifford, the chairman of the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), highlighted this concern during a recent interview with a local news organization.
AI Requires Regulation Within 2 Years
Clifford underscored the necessity for prompt regulation of AI to mitigate the risk of it becoming “very powerful” within the next two years, as humans currently lack control over these systems.
“We’ve got two years to get in place a framework that makes both controlling and regulating these very large models much more possible than it is today,” he stated.

Addressing the immediate and future dangers that may arise from the use of AI tools, Clifford noted that individuals could exploit AI-generated data to develop bioweapons or execute cyber attacks.
Clifford is not alone in his concerns regarding the risks associated with the expansion of AI. An open letter from the Center for AI Safety, signed by 350 AI specialists, advocated for recognizing AI as an existential threat, akin to nuclear weapons and pandemics that endanger human survival.

Computer scientist and former Google employee Geoffrey Hinton also considers the possibility of AI surpassing human authority. Earlier this month, he remarked in an interview that humanity is developing intelligence that could surpass human reasoning and pose risks to our survival.
Hinton, regarded as one of the pioneers of AI, pointed out the efficiency and knowledge-sharing potential of digital intelligence in contrast to the constraints of biological intelligence. While acknowledging the potential advantages of AI, Hinton stressed the importance of addressing and preventing any adverse effects associated with it.
