More than 74 million individuals acquired Bitcoin for the first time in 2023, boosting the global count of its holders by 33% to 296 million, which constitutes about 51% of the overall user base. Analysts identified several key factors contributing to BTC’s rising popularity, including:

  • the advancement of spot Bitcoin ETFs;
  • the adoption of the Ordinals protocol;
  • significant interest from institutional investors.

In the previous year, around 35 million individuals also opted to become ETH holders, elevating the global user count of the leading altcoin by 39% to 124 million. Overall, ETH is owned by approximately 21% of the total digital asset holders worldwide. Analysts link this increase in popularity to the execution of the Shanghai hard fork, which enabled users to withdraw staked ETH, thereby stimulating growth in liquid staking protocols.
