The Rock and Oprah Launch Pro-Crypto Fund to Assist Individuals Impacted by the Maui Wildfires

The well-known American actor Dwayne Johnson, commonly referred to as The Rock, along with talk show host Oprah Winfrey, has initiated a program aimed at assisting individuals displaced by the catastrophic wildfires in Maui, Hawaii.

The initiative, named the People’s Fund of Maui, is open to donors worldwide and accepts contributions in cryptocurrencies.

Crypto to the Rescue

The Rock took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that the fund will provide financial assistance “directly in the pockets of those who were impacted by the recent wildfires.”

He specified that every adult resident of Lahaina and Kula (the areas that experienced the most severe impact from the disaster) qualifies to receive $1,200 monthly “to support them during this recovery phase.”

The renowned Hollywood actor and his collaborator in this effort, Oprah Winfrey, commenced the campaign with a donation of $10 million and encouraged others to contribute as well.

In addition to donations through various fiat currencies, individuals can also contribute crypto assets. The People’s Fund of Maui supports several major digital currencies by market capitalization, including Bitcoin (), Ether (), Solana (SOL), Polkadot (DOT), Polygon (MATIC), Litecoin (LTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and others.

The wildfires in Maui, which ignited in early August, were the deadliest in the United States in the last century. They resulted in over 100 fatalities, with many more individuals reported missing. The fires also obliterated numerous homes, structures, and businesses, leading to damages amounting to billions of dollars.

Crypto’s Involvement in Other Good Causes

In addition to the recent wildfires, 2023 has also seen catastrophic earthquakes. One such disaster struck Turkey and Syria in February, resulting in nearly 60,000 deaths and leaving many without shelter.

Cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Bybit, BitMEX, and Bitfinex, were among those providing aid packages to the impacted areas. Furthermore, Binance airdropped $5 million worth of BNB to users in Turkey who were affected.

Previously, numerous digital asset companies and individuals within the community contributed millions of dollars in digital assets to Ukraine to bolster its military efforts against Russia. As reported by CryptoPotato, the war-affected nation raised over $225 million in crypto by the end of July.
