The Lightning Network Offers Advantages for Minor Bitcoin Miners Ahead of Halving Event

25

Interest in Bitcoin () is increasing as the Halving Event approaches, with the Lightning Network playing a crucial role in aiding small-scale miners. Bitcoin miners are particularly focused on how this year’s halving could affect their operations.

For example, as mining rewards diminish due to the halving, the efficiency of miners has become increasingly vital. Consequently, larger miners are exploring energy-efficient methods to conduct their activities.

The halving will also affect small-scale miners. Jesse Shrader, Co-Founder and CEO of Amboss, informed Cryptonews that pools will receive fewer Bitcoins as a result of the halving. Shrader also mentioned that escalating transaction fees will pose additional difficulties.

“To facilitate miner payouts, third-party mining pools will need to cover rising transaction fees,” Shrader stated. “This implies that all miners participating in pools will likely need to accumulate at least .1 BTC before they can receive a payout.”

The Lightning Network Assists Small-Scale Miners

Shrader is of the opinion that miners utilizing the Lightning Network (LN) can address the aforementioned challenges.

The LN serves as a layer-2 solution for the Bitcoin blockchain. It utilizes payment channels, allowing peer-to-peer payments between two parties outside of the costly main Bitcoin blockchain.

Once established, LN channels enable the involved parties to conduct an unlimited number of nearly instantaneous transactions, which are also significantly cheaper than those executed on the Bitcoin blockchain.

“Mining pools will need to adopt LN for payouts, as this provides a reusable payment framework, rather than requiring mining pools to process multiple, separate transactions for payouts,” Shrader explained.

Although LN was introduced in 2018 and is mainly used by enthusiasts, Shrader pointed out that businesses are increasingly adopting the network.

“Amboss serves as a discoverability platform for The Lightning Network, assisting in the establishment of necessary peer-to-peer channels,” he stated. “We have also been conducting data analytics on LN and observed a shift in the customer base towards businesses.”

Small-Scale Miners Support Lightning Network Pre-Halving

It seems logical for small-scale mining pools to utilize LN for payouts.

“NiceHash, for instance, has already implemented LN for this purpose,” Shrader noted.

A NiceHash blog post from March 1 indicated that NiceHash began offering manual LN withdrawals in 2020.

The post details that NiceHash miners can receive mining payouts directly to an external Lightning Network Address, allowing for instant mining payouts every 4 hours without incurring Bitcoin blockchain transaction fees.

According to the NiceHash website, miners who do not utilize the Lightning Network (LN) face a transaction fee of 0.0001 BTC or more, depending on the prevailing conditions of the Bitcoin blockchain.

This consideration is particularly significant as the Bitcoin Halving Event nears, which is expected to raise Bitcoin transaction fees.

More Small-Scale Miners Adopt LN

Kristian Csepcsar, CMO at Braiins – a prominent mining pool in the Bitcoin sector – informed Cryptonews that the Lightning Network has recently been integrated into the Braiins Pool platform.

“As of today, the Braiins Pool platform supports LN,” Csepcsar stated. “Braiins Pool has been the longest-running mining pool since 2010, with over 1.3 million BTC mined.”

The addition of LN support on Braiins is a significant advancement, as Csepcsar highlighted that many small miners, hobby miners, or those using home heating devices and mini miners will benefit.

“All of these scenarios yield very small amounts of rewards, making it challenging to pay these miners on-chain,” he explained. “For this reason, we have introduced LN payouts, enabling even a home miner using a mining device for heat production for a few hours daily to receive a few thousand sats each day at no cost.”

Csepcsar added, “It is advisable for miners not to reuse a single payout on-chain address for their numerous transactions, although most miners do not adhere to this advice.”

He believes that LN addresses this concern while greatly enhancing users’ privacy.

Lightning Network Gains Traction

Jay Beddict, VP of Research at Foundry, informed Cryptonews that LN will be attractive for small-scale miners following the upcoming halving event.

“It may be wise for interested miners to establish Lightning channels before the halving, as fees could become highly unpredictable in the lead-up to and after the halving,” Beddict stated. “However, many small miners do not generate sufficient daily earnings to meet minimum withdrawal requirements on pools. Lightning provides a means to reduce custodial risk without needing to earn more to satisfy on-chain thresholds.”

In light of this, Beddict mentioned that Foundry – recognized for operating the Bitcoin mining pool “Foundry USA Pool” – is comfortable with LN’s functionality and usage.

Alex Busarov, Founder and CEO at Heatbit, also shared with Cryptonews that Heatbit plans to integrate LN soon to manage its miner payouts. Heatbit offers Bitcoin-mining home devices that allow users to heat their spaces through mining, rather than relying on conventional heating methods.

“The Lightning Network is especially advantageous for our home-based users who may earn smaller mining rewards,” Beddict noted. “This approach minimizes transaction fees and accelerates the transfer process, making it feasible to promptly pay out even the smallest rewards.”

Challenges May Hinder Lightning Network’s Adoption

While it is noteworthy that more small-scale miners are utilizing the Lightning Network, challenges persist. Austin Mitchell, Co-founder and CEO at energy firm Synota, informed Cryptonews that the primary obstacle with adopting The Lightning Network is its acceptance.

“The Lightning Network is truly only beneficial if miners have counterparties to transact with on the network,” Mitchell stated.

Fortunately, the Lightning Network seems to be expanding. A recent report from Arcane Research indicated that over 80 million users now have access to LN, a significant increase from the 100,000 users in 2022.

Moreover, Mitchell explained that Synota aims to promote LN adoption by enabling energy suppliers, hosting and infrastructure service companies, and brokers to receive payments via LN.

“Synota is addressing the payee adoption issue by connecting with various payment rails to automate the movement of funds based on the enforcement of contracts in a non-custodial manner,” he stated. “One of those payment rails that Synota connects to is the Lightning Network, which allows Bitcoin miners to pay for their energy using Bitcoin.”

Although this may facilitate LN growth, Beddict explained that effectively operating on LN still necessitates maintaining a complex hot wallet infrastructure.

“This may introduce complexity beyond that of merely receiving payouts on-chain,” Beddict noted.

Nonetheless, Csepcsar remains hopeful, emphasizing that assistance from experts has enabled Braiins to successfully implement LN payouts.

“We are still in the early stages of Bitcoin and even more so with LN,” he remarked. “The network can be a challenging new technology with hurdles such as balancing the channels, etc. That’s why we have engaged experts to make this a reality.”
