The DFINITY Foundation Introduces Three Significant Enhancements

The DFINITY Foundation, a significant contributor to the Internet Computer (ICP), has introduced three “transformative upgrades.”

As per the press release distributed to Cryptonews, these upgrades significantly reduce transaction latency, enhance developer tools, and facilitate “vast” on-chain data storage.

Consequently, they render on-chain blockchain applications “extremely” responsive, more scalable, and more accommodating for developers, it asserted.

“These three milestones represent a substantial progression of the Internet Computer Protocol,” remarked Jan Camenisch, CTO and Cryptographer at DFINITY.

“By halving latency, boosting throughput, and further expanding storage, we have empowered developers to create a much wider array of applications entirely on-chain.”

Camenisch noted that the team has “broadened the gap to all other protocols even more” and “simplified the lives of developers” with the new protocol features concerning canister management.

Tokamak, Beryllium, and Stellarator

The three significant upgrades are named Tokamak, Beryllium, and Stellarator – each providing practical solutions for blockchain initiatives, as stated in the announcement.

The ICP aims to leverage these three to establish itself as the preferred option for developers creating decentralized applications (dapps).

Specifically, the announcement highlighted dapps that necessitate high performance, extensive data management, and improved tools.

The team contended that the upgrades would “tackle some of the most urgent challenges in the blockchain sector.”

Tokamak aims to reduce network latency. This, in turn, is expected to achieve transaction speeds comparable to those found in traditional finance (TradFi), according to the announcement. Subnets are now achieving speeds exceeding 2.5 blocks per second.

This upgrade presents two primary advantages, the team indicated. One is that users and developers will experience a more responsive network, and the other is that it paves the way for broader Web3 adoption.

Meanwhile, Beryllium equips developers with new tools to enhance their workflows, allowing for easier app building, troubleshooting, and deployment.

These tools include canister snapshots for data protection, improved logging for better visibility, and comprehensive backtraces.

Lastly, the team characterized the Stellarator upgrade as “a breakthrough in on-chain data storage.”

According to the announcement, it allows each subnet to accommodate over 1TB of memory per canister.

This is significant as it would provide ample storage for data-intensive applications that often face storage challenges.

The announcement stated that this upgrade enables developers to create “sophisticated applications requiring large-scale data processing,” thereby introducing “a new level of utility to blockchain technology.”

Meanwhile, the Internet Computer asserted that it serves as a complete alternative technology stack that replaces the centralized IT infrastructure dominated by Big Tech.

It allows developers to construct fully decentralized applications and services that operate entirely from the blockchain.

Developers can then extend these products into innovative areas such as SocialFi and GameFi and “develop the fully decentralized metaverse.”
