The Central Bank of Russia addressed inquiries regarding the digital ruble as a payment method for purchases on websites and mobile applications. The question and response were shared on the Telegram channel of the primary financial regulator.

The Central Bank confirmed that payments can be made online using digital rubles. Currently, this option is available only for participants in the pilot project for the central bank’s digital currency () launch.

If a store or another business already accepts payments through the Fast Payment System (FPS), there will be no need to adjust or modify the infrastructure, the regulator assures. This also applies to offline transactions: businesses will be able to accept digital rubles through existing banking terminals without the need for special equipment. For the payment to be processed, the customer must scan the QR code at the checkout and select digital ruble from the list of payment methods.

To start accepting digital rubles, organizations must open an account with a bank connected to the Central Bank’s digital ruble platform.

From September 1, trade and service enterprises with revenue exceeding 120 million rubles in the previous year and having a valid acquiring agreement with a bank recognized by the Central Bank as “significant in the payment services market” must ensure the acceptance of payments in digital rubles. This requirement pertains to sellers of goods and services operating exclusively in retail, the regulator clarified.

In March, the digital form of the national currency was used for the first time to pay an administrative fine of 1500 rubles, reported Roman Artyukhin, head of the Federal Treasury. Previously, the management company of St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport indicated that a visitor had made a payment for a service using digital rubles via a QR code for the first time.

At the end of February, the Central Bank of Russia introduced a draft document outlining the procedures for issuing salaries in digital rubles.
