Taiwan’s Strengthening Crypto Regulatory Framework

The regulatory landscape for cryptocurrency in Taiwan has evolved swiftly. In 2021, the FSC enacted strict anti-money laundering (AML) regulations aimed at cryptocurrency service providers.

These regulations were further reinforced in September 2023 with the introduction of detailed guidelines, which included a prohibition on unregistered Bitcoin exchanges operating in Taiwan.

The evolving regulatory framework led to the formation of the Taiwan Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) Association, chaired by Titan Cheng, the founder and CEO of BitoPro.

This association is dedicated to working alongside government and law enforcement agencies to reduce fraud and criminal activities within the sector.

This development followed a proposal by the Ministry of Justice to revise Taiwan’s anti-money laundering laws, broadening their applicability to include digital asset providers. The suggested amendments could impose fines of up to $1.5 million or prison sentences on non-compliant crypto firms.

Taiwan Mobile’s foray into the cryptocurrency market aligns with the country’s initiatives to create a transparent and fair system for cryptocurrencies.

The combined effects of Taiwan Mobile’s actions and the newly established industry association underscore Taiwan’s commitment to fostering a crypto-friendly environment, in line with global best practices in consumer protection.

As Taiwan Mobile explores potential partnerships with local cryptocurrency platforms and considers investments in the sector, the company’s use of its VASP status to influence the future of digital assets in Taiwan is eagerly anticipated.
