Switzerland Initiates Automatic Sharing of Cryptocurrency Asset Information

The Swiss government has sanctioned a list of 74 nations with which it will initiate the automatic exchange of information regarding crypto-assets in 2027, adhering to the CARF standard.

The Federal Council has ratified a regulation to commence the automatic exchange of information (AEOI) concerning crypto-assets. The pertinent agreements are anticipated to come into effect on January 1, 2026, with the inaugural data exchange planned for 2027. This initiative seeks to bolster transparency in digital asset transactions globally.

The list of nations with which Switzerland will share data encompasses all EU member states, the United Kingdom, and the majority of G20 countries, with the exception of the United States and Saudi Arabia. The exchange will proceed only if two criteria are satisfied: mutual interest from the partner nation and adherence to reporting obligations under the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), established by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Prior to the commencement of the exchange, the Federal Council will evaluate each approved country’s adherence to the standards. In this regard, the existing AEOI monitoring framework for financial accounts will be broadened to incorporate crypto-assets. This will necessitate modifications to the current federal ordinance. Parliament is expected to finalize discussions on the relevant legislation by the close of 2025.
