S&P Global Ratings to Assess Tokenized Assets in Fixed Income Activities
S&P Global Ratings has become involved in the exploration of financial asset tokenization as part of Project Guardian. The agency will investigate and evaluate the risks associated with the use of tokenized assets in fixed income transactions.
As a leading independent credit rating agency, S&P Global Ratings has announced its engagement in Project Guardian, an initiative launched by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) that examines how tokenized assets can enhance the liquidity and efficiency of financial markets.
In the context of the project, S&P Global will participate in various initiatives aimed at investigating the potential applications of tokenized assets in fixed income operations. Andrew O’Neil, Digital Assets Analytical Lead at S&P Global Ratings, emphasized the agency’s dedication to addressing the risk mitigation associated with transactions involving tokenized assets. The agency intends to utilize all available resources to lessen the effects of tokenization on financial markets.
S&P Global joins a number of other firms participating in Project Guardian, initially concentrating on pilot projects that involve currency and bond exchanges utilizing liquidity pools based on tokenized counterparts. The initiative will also look into repo operations with digital bonds, create listing protocols for debt securities, and support ICOs on the Singapore Exchange.
S&P Global is now the 24th member of Project Guardian’s industrial group, which mainly consists of prominent banks and asset managers. These traditional finance companies within Project Guardian manage assets and perform currency exchanges on public blockchain networks, while investigating the interoperability of different decentralized infrastructure components.
Project Guardian, which was launched by the MAS in May 2022 with contributions from JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and UBS, expanded in 2023 to form a regulatory group that focuses on frameworks for digital asset regulation.
