The Cryptonews.net team examined over 550,000 news articles related to the crypto sector to evaluate the frequency of mentions of individuals and their media exposure. Utilizing the gathered data, the ranking of the top 54 crypto figures for 2023 was established.

The top three positions remained consistent with 2022. The most recognized media figure in the crypto sector, despite facing legal challenges in the U.S. and a conviction on eight criminal charges, continued to be Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the defunct FTX and Co-Founder of Alameda Research. He received over 8,800 media mentions throughout 2023.

Changpeng Zhao held onto second place with 7,376 mentions, having also encountered criminal charges from U.S. regulators in 2023, which led to his resignation as CEO of Binance. The third position is occupied by the steadfast opinion leader, crypto advocate, billionaire, and new owner of Twitter, now referred to as X, Elon Musk. His remarks were cited in the media approximately 6,000 times during the year.

The top 10 also featured:

  • Gary Gensler, Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Over the year, he advanced five positions in the ranking due to the agency’s vigorous actions against crypto firms in the U.S. and the ensuing criticism from both the crypto community and government officials.
  • Justin Sun, Founder of the Tron Foundation. He improved his ranking by 16 positions compared to 2022.
  • Vitalik Buterin, Co-Founder of the Ethereum network. Despite Ethereum’s achievements in 2023, Vitalik fell two spots in the ranking, landing in sixth place.
  • Richard Teng, the newly appointed CEO of Binance. He was the sole newcomer in the top 10, attributed to his recent role. His name appeared in the media over 3,000 times during the year. CP Media conducted an exclusive interview with him.
  • David Schwartz, Ripple’s CTO and Architect of XRP Ledger. His ranking increased by 11 points due to the company’s successes throughout the year and progress in its lawsuit against the SEC.
  • Do Kwon, former CEO of Terraform Labs. Although his ranking dropped four positions over the year, the media attention surrounding his arrest in Montenegro and subsequent extradition helped him maintain ninth place.
  • Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase. He held steady in the tenth position among the most recognized crypto figures.

Alongside Richard Teng, other newcomers to the ranking in 2023 include:

  • Lead Developer of Shiba Inu, known by the alias Shytoshi Kusama;
  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman;
  • An anonymous researcher and whistleblower of fraudulent projects, known as ZachXBT;
  • Journalist Colin Wu;
  • Popular television figure Jim Cramer;
  • American politician Patrick McHenry, among others.

The methodology employed by Cryptonews.net analysts is grounded in the examination of English-language content. The ranking is determined by the number of mentions of an individual in headlines, as well as the ratio of this figure to the frequency of their mentions in the news. This ranking provides insight into which media figures are opinion leaders in the crypto domain and may influence market dynamics.
