Russia and the US Address Bitcoin Mining at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Facility, Excluding Ukraine
Russian President Putin stated that discussions are underway between the US and Russia concerning the joint administration of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, excluding Ukraine from the talks. He asserted that the US has an interest in utilizing the plant’s electricity for Bitcoin mining.
During a session with business leaders, President Putin revealed the initiative, as reported by Russian media outlet Kommersant. Furthermore, Moscow and Washington are exploring the potential for supplying electricity to Ukraine.
Putin mentioned that the United States is contemplating the joint management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant without the involvement of Ukraine.

Moreover, Putin indicated that Ukrainian professionals will continue their roles at the largest nuclear power facility in Europe, albeit holding Russian citizenship. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was taken over by Russian forces in March 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested a collaborative operation of the Plant with the US. He remarked that the matter of Zaporizhzhia remains one of the most complex aspects of the US peace proposal for Ukraine.
International organizations, including the IAEA, have consistently emphasized that any decisions regarding the plant made without Ukraine’s involvement are unlawful.
Ukraine Power Grid Crisis
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is presently not supplying electricity to the grid due to its occupation by Russia since March 2022. Its six reactors are in a safety shutdown and rely entirely on emergency diesel generators for critical cooling, facing frequent outages.
Additionally, an increase in Russian drones and missiles compared to previous years has pushed energy supplies to a critical point. According to a WSJ report, Russia has launched over 5,000 missiles and long-range drones into Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure.
Analysts from the private intelligence firm Molfar indicated in a study that three active crypto mining pools with six miners in Ukraine likely consumed 33 kW per hour. This data was gathered from July 2023 to June 2024 using various open sources.
At present, the US has not issued any official comment regarding the ongoing discussions about the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, excluding Ukraine from the negotiations.
