Ross Ulbricht Receives Warm Reception at Bitcoin 2025, Declares ‘Struggle for Freedom Continues’
Ross Ulbricht made his initial public appearance at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas as a free individual, following over ten years of incarceration for his involvement in operating the darknet platform Silk Road, prior to receiving a pardon from U.S. President Trump. An emotional Ross expressed gratitude to the Bitcoin community for its unwavering support.
On May 29, 2015, a federal judge had sentenced Ross to two life sentences plus 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Silk Road founder reflected on his prison experience, stating, “there were days when I thought I would die in that awful cage,” yet he endeavored to find joy even during the bleakest moments.
While addressing the audience, Ross remarked that the concept for which he risked his life and lost his freedom evolved into a significant movement. A movement so substantial that, a decade later, it returned to secure his release, he noted.
“There is still more freedom to be won”
Ross disclosed that after he participated in the Bitcoin conference in 2021 via a phone call from prison, he was placed in solitary confinement and subjected to intense surveillance. However, he stated that it was worthwhile and made him feel as though he had momentarily escaped the confines of prison. “Today is the mirror image of that,” he observed.
Discussing the reclamation of his freedom, he stated, “winning your freedom feels as incredible as losing it feels terrible.” Ross proclaimed from the stage that the journey is not complete; there remains more freedom to be achieved and additional efforts to be made. “Freedom is worth the struggle,” he emphasized.
Ross is catching up with latest technology
Ross Ulbricht is still acclimating to technology after emerging from a “time capsule.” He remarked:
“I effectively went into a time capsule in 2013 and now I’m coming out like Rip Van Winkle. I mean, just a few months ago when I walked out of prison, I’d never seen a drone. I had never experienced VR or chatted with AI.”
Reflecting on the advancements in the cryptocurrency sector since his incarceration, Ross noted that when he initiated Silk Road, there was only one exchange available for purchasing bitcoin. “Now, it appears that every app I download includes a built-in wallet with one-click purchasing options.” He added that there are numerous new cryptocurrencies and blockchains, each intriguing in its own way. “There’s DeFi and Web 3 and now there’s AI to assist me in navigating it all. It’s overwhelming.”
In a poignant video montage that played before he took the stage, scenes of Ulbricht adapting to life outside prison filled the screen. He was shown walking on the beach, learning to surf, sharing quiet moments with his wife, and enjoying his newfound freedom.
“Freedom, decentralization and unity”
Ross concluded his address by reminding the Bitcoin community of the three fundamental principles they should uphold for further growth – freedom, decentralization, and unity. Recalling his time in prison, Ross mentioned that guards and administration prefer when prisoners are divided, as it makes them easier to control. However, when the prisoners united, the administration listened, he added. “When we all went on hunger strike together, they showed up and listened.”
Ross urged the crypto community to refrain from viewing one another as adversaries. “As long as we can agree that we deserve freedom and that decentralization is the means to secure it, then we can unite, we can support each other, just as you supported me, freedom, decentralization, unity. Stay true to these principles and the future is ours.”
