Residents complaining about noise succeeded in shutting down the mining farm0

The American mining firm CleanSpark has shut down its 25 MW mining facility, which had been operational for five years in Washington County, Tennessee. Local residents had raised concerns about the noise generated by the farm.

The facility ceased operations on March 28, following a settlement agreement that required the company to halt its activities and dismantle the equipment within 120 days. CleanSpark had established the farm after acquiring the mining company GRIID Infrastructure in October 2024. The firm anticipated that this acquisition would enhance its capacity by over 400 MW.

However, residents of New Salem soon began to voice complaints regarding the continuous noise from the fans used to cool the mining equipment. Individuals reported that the persistent low-frequency noise disrupted their sleep, work, and overall well-being.

In 2025, CleanSpark encountered similar opposition from local residents in Mountain City, also in Tennessee. More than 1,700 individuals signed a petition demanding the halt of construction for a 30 MW mining facility by CleanSpark.

Several years prior, Tennessee authorities accused the mining company Red Dog of violating zoning regulations, exceeding noise thresholds, and causing environmental harm, leading to a demand for the closure of its facility. Last year, Lake Superior Academy in Michigan was compelled to postpone the construction of new buildings due to noise pollution from a nearby mining farm.
