On April 12, IMVU and Nadya Tolokonnikova, the founder of Pussy Riot, a Russian feminist punk-rock group, revealed the establishment of a community space in the metaverse during the NFT NYC 2023 event.

As reported by Venture Beat, the Pussy Riot community space will be introduced within the interactive 3D chatroom game IMVU. Furthermore, the initial 5,000 users who explore the metaverse and complete a complimentary mission will gain access to an NFT crafted by Tolokonnikova.

Utilizing The Metaverse to Advocate for Various Causes

The aim of the community space “Utopia: A Virtual Haven for All” is to create a distinctive and inclusive atmosphere for all women, BIPOC, and individuals from the LGBTQIA+ community, where participants can engage within a feminist church that shares ideologies akin to those promoted by Pussy Riot.

Individuals interested in visiting Tolokonnikova’s metaverse can do so starting April 14 by logging into IMVU and designing a personalized avatar to their preference.

According to Tolokonnikova, the establishment of this digital space marks the initial step toward realizing her vision of constructing a “Pink Church of Feminism” that embraces all gender diversities in the physical world.

“It’s very thrilling to launch Utopia in IMVU and make it feminist, queer, diverse, and radical. It has always been a dream of mine to create a Pink Church of Feminism, […] Eventually, I’ll find a way to build it in real life. But the first step is to launch this vision in the metaverse.”

Tolokonnikova Engages in Additional Projects

A dedicated feminist activist, Tolokonnikova, who asserts she was imprisoned for two years for protesting against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime, mentioned that this is one of the initial projects centered on the crypto ecosystem she is pursuing to assist LGBTQIA+ communities in Russia.

Tolokonnikova also indicated that she is creating digital wearables with IMVU to support organizations like North Caucasus SOS, which aids homosexuals in safely escaping Chechnya, a region in Russia where “gay individuals are significantly at risk.”

Maura Welch, Vice President of Marketing at Together Labs, expressed their enthusiasm for collaborating with IMVU and Nadya to bring the artist’s designs into the metaverse, inviting all her supporters.

“Nadya has long loved the freedom and aesthetic possibilities of the IMVU metaverse, and so we worked together on an extraordinary collaboration bringing Nadya’s art and activism to life for IMVU’s incredibly diverse and wildly creative community. We welcome Nadya’s fans to IMVU in joining her Utopia community,”

Members of Tolokonnikova’s Church intend to organize live events featuring various international speakers, along with a music festival for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.
