Polygon Labs Proposes Strategy to Facilitate Celo’s Transition to Ethereum Layer 2 Utilizing CDK
Polygon Labs has proposed that the Celo blockchain community explore the use of its Chain Development Kit (CDK) to facilitate the planned layer-2 migration on the Ethereum network.
This suggestion follows cLabs, the main development team for Celo, revealing an alternative approach in July to convert its layer-1 into an Ethereum-compatible layer-2 solution by employing Optimism’s OP Stack. The OP Stack is a comparable customizable toolkit that utilizes Optimism’s “optimistic” technology.
Transition to Ethereum Layer-2 Through Polygon CDK
Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon Labs, presented a recommendation to the Celo community this week, urging the blockchain ecosystem to consider adopting Polygon’s Chain Development Kit, which is a codebase that allows developers to create tailored layer-2 chains using zero-knowledge (ZK) technology.
The proposal on the Celo governance forum indicated,
“Polygon Labs is thrilled to welcome Celo home to Ethereum in the chain’s transition from an independent EVM-compatible L1 to an Ethereum L2. As Ethereum enthusiasts focused on scaling, we are incredibly eager to witness Celo’s expansion into a burgeoning and vibrant Ethereum ecosystem and assist in extending Ethereum blockspace.”
Nailwal clarified that this transition would enable Celo to fully capitalize on the advantages of functioning as an Ethereum layer-2 solution while maintaining the core characteristics that initially contributed to the chain’s success.
The executive further highlighted that this shift signifies a substantial technical improvement, “that should come with inherent Ethereum alignment and a developer experience as close as possible, without sacrificing security.”
Polygon CDK
The Polygon CDK toolkit was launched in August, aimed at enabling developers to construct blockchain networks utilizing ZK proofs. This open-source codebase provides developers with the capability to connect chains through a ZK-based bridge, forming a cohesive ecosystem known as the “Value Layer.”
Following this, the Cosmos-based layer-1 blockchain, Canto, announced its migration to a zero-knowledge layer-2 on Ethereum via Polygon CDK. The platform stated that this transition aligns with its goals to create a blockchain focused on real-world assets (RWA).
In addition to Canto, other projects such as Astar, Gnosis, and IDEX have already declared intentions to develop ZK layer-2 solutions using the toolkit.
