PayPal Increases Access to PYUSD for International Transactions
PayPal has broadened the reach of its PayPal USD (PYUSD) stablecoin to enhance cross-border transactions in Asian and African regions.
PayPal, the leading debit-based electronic payment platform, revealed that its financial partners will utilize PYUSD for cross-border money transfers via the infrastructure of Xoom, PayPal’s subsidiary specializing in electronic money transfers.
As stated in the press release, this initiative seeks to enhance access to digital financial services in African and Asia-Pacific regions and facilitate international transactions using PYUSD beyond conventional banking hours. The initial partners to utilize international payment processing through PYUSD are Cebuana Lhuillier and Yellow Card.
Cebuana Lhuillier is recognized as the largest microfinance service provider in the Philippines.
Yellow Card stands as the first and largest licensed provider of stablecoin-to-fiat currency exchange services in Africa.
Jose Fernandez da Ponte, Senior Vice President of Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Digital Currencies at PayPal, mentioned in a press release that cross-border transactions significantly contribute to economic development and prosperity in emerging markets. The collaboration between local FinTech firms and PayPal will facilitate smooth remittances across borders.
“At the local level, there is a necessity for privately owned local FinTech companies that can convert cryptocurrencies into what the user requires. The significance of local payment providers lies in their familiarity to the community, allowing the sender of funds to avoid concerns about conversion after receipt,” stated Max Krupyshev, CEO of CryptoProcessing.com, while discussing the role of local financial solution providers on the Purpose Driven FinTech podcast.
The payment system PayPal introduced the dollar stablecoin PYUSD in September 2023. Subsequently, in April of this year, Xoom representatives announced the launch of an international payment service for residents of the United States, excluding Hawaii, which allowed for commission-free fund transfers to 160 countries using PYUSD.
