On-Chain Analytics Service Nansen Alerts to Security Breach, Impacting 7% of Users

Nansen, a leading on-chain analytics platform, has issued a security alert to its users following a breach that originated from a third-party vendor.
The security incident enabled hackers to obtain password hashes of Nansen users, leading to an immediate inquiry.
Nansen’s Users’ Password Hashes Affected in Incident
On Sept. 20, Nansen was notified of a breach in the security measures of one of its trusted third-party vendors. This breach provided unauthorized access to an account responsible for managing customer access to the Nansen platform.
As per a statement from the company, the involved third-party vendor is a reputable organization, serving numerous Fortune 500 companies and other businesses in the crypto sector. Nansen also recommended that the vendor publicly disclose the breach to alert other potential victims.
Initial findings from the investigations carried out over the last 48 hours indicate that around 6.8% of Nansen’s user base has been impacted by the breach. These users had their email addresses exposed, with some also having their password hashes disclosed. Additionally, some users had their blockchain addresses compromised.
Nansen Responds After Security Breach
In the aftermath of the incident, affected users received an email from support detailing the extent of the exposure and advising them to reset their passwords.
Users were encouraged to change their passwords as a precaution due to the potential risk of unauthorized access stemming from the exposed email addresses and password hashes.
Moreover, the company reassured that users’ funds in their wallets remained safe, as Nansen does not request private keys. However, clients were advised to remain alert against phishing attempts and to verify the legitimacy of any communications claiming to be from Nansen.
In light of this security issue, Nansen’s CEO, Alex Svanevik, highlighted his firm’s dedication to transparency and user communication, stating, “We understand the concerns of users impacted by this. Ensuring the security of customer data is extremely important to us. We are working closely with the vendor, our external legal advisors, and cybersecurity experts to conduct a full investigation.”
