Nigeria Aims to Establish a Tokenized Property Market

Nigeria has launched a real estate tokenization initiative in Lagos state. The objective of this project is to enhance transaction transparency and efficiency while drawing additional funds to the local budget.

The Lagos state government of Nigeria has revealed plans for an ambitious project aimed at establishing a tokenized real estate market. These plans were detailed in the documents for the Eko Revenue Plus Summit, which is set to take place in Lagos from September 25 to 26, 2024.

While specific technical details of the project are not yet disclosed, the following information is available:

• the projected timeline for the project is up to 16 months;
• the budget is set at 500 million naira (~$314,500);
• the initiative will be overseen by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology (FMIST).

This tokenization initiative aims to revolutionize the local real estate sector. The creators believe that blockchain technology will enhance accessibility to the real estate market for a broader array of investors. The allocated budget will support the development and launch of the platform, as well as the marketing and promotion of the initiative.

The proponents of the project anticipate that it will contribute over 100 billion naira annually to the local budget through revenue generated from licenses, taxes, and fees.

In October 2022, the Lagos government announced a collaboration with Gluwa, which intended to utilize blockchain technology to tokenize agricultural land in the area.
