<psupport for the initiative comes from a variety of organizations, including brink, bitget, chainalysis, kraken, polygon, brave, inc., hacken, cryptoquant, nansen, unstoppable domains, liquity, mara, busha, zulu, and many others, showcasing unified effort within crypto community to enhance bitcoin’s acceptance in society.

The petition, which seeks to introduce a Bitcoin emoji, will unfold over 50 days on Change.org, culminating in a direct proposal to the Unicode Consortium during their 2024 Window site. The objective is not merely symbolic but indicative of the community’s solidarity and commitment to advancing the global adoption of Bitcoin.

Taking cues from successful emoji campaigns in the past, such as Taco Bell’s pursuit of a taco emoji and Tinder’s push for an interracial couple icon, the Bitcoin Emoji initiative aims to generate sufficient momentum to encourage action from Unicode.

Kosta Kantchev, co-founder and executive chairman of Nexo, stressed the importance of a unified Bitcoin symbol on all keyboards, given Bitcoin’s substantial market presence and widespread use. He pointed out the large number of Bitcoin addresses and professionals within the global community, emphasizing that the Bitcoin Emoji is overdue and reflects the changing practices and acceptance of Bitcoin in everyday life. He stated,

“With 1.26 billion total Bitcoin addresses and 190,000+ professionals and tech pioneers pushing the global community forward, the Bitcoin Emoji is long overdue.”

Global Movement Pushes for the Bitcoin Emoji to Symbolize Mainstream Acceptance

Eleonor Genova, head of communications at Nexo, referred to the campaign as the “heartbeat of a global movement,” resonating with the aspirations of a diverse community. She highlighted the essential role of emojis in contemporary communication and how a Bitcoin emoji would represent legitimacy while aiding education and mainstream acceptance.

Genova noted that the campaign is not solely about representation, recognizing Bitcoin’s influence and democratizing its presence worldwide. As Bitcoin gains visibility, particularly following regulatory approvals like the United States’ first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), its impact extends beyond the crypto sector.

She envisioned Bitcoin’s emoji as a common symbol appearing on billions of screens globally and emphasized the industry’s collective duty to advocate for its creation.

“While traditional currencies were quick to find their emoji counterparts, the cryptocurrency realm, with Bitcoin leading the charge, remains conspicuously absent from this digital form of expression.”

Emojis, which originated as simple pictographs in Japan during the 1990s, have transformed into essential components of digital communication, transcending language barriers and reflecting societal values. The push for an official Bitcoin emoji coincides with Bitcoin’s recent rise to an all-time high and anticipates the cryptocurrency’s fourth halving event, scheduled to take place later this month.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Our destination? The #BitcoinEmoji.
