New Ethereum Privacy Strategy Revealed
The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled modifications designed to integrate privacy into the network’s technical framework. These initiatives are detailed in a newly released roadmap.
The Ethereum Foundation has presented a refreshed approach to enhancing privacy features within the ecosystem, outlining essential directions and specific initiatives that will be executed in the upcoming years.
It is highlighted that Ethereum, with aspirations to function as a global settlement layer, faces the risk of becoming a mechanism for widespread surveillance without integrated privacy features. To mitigate this risk, the PSE team (previously known as Privacy & Scaling Explorations) has been restructured into the Privacy Stewards of Ethereum. Their revised objective is to normalize privacy within the ecosystem rather than treating it as an exception.
The revised PSE strategy encompasses three primary pillars that will underpin Ethereum’s long-term privacy advancements:
- Private writes — ensuring that private transactions are as cost-effective and accessible as public ones.
- Private reads — safeguarding users while they read and engage with the blockchain without disclosing their identity or intentions.
- Private proving — streamlining and expediting the generation of private proofs for data and identities.
Specific initiatives comprise a range of projects. In the next three to six months, the PSE team will concentrate on the following areas:
- Private transfers. Ongoing development of PlasmaFold, integration of post-quantum accumulation methods, introduction of the Kohaku wallet, and implementation of stealth addresses. A functional prototype is expected to be showcased at Devconnect 2025.
- Private voting. Release of the “State of Private Voting 2025” report and collaboration with Aragon and other teams on new protocols.
- Confidential DeFi. Formation of an Institutional Privacy Task Force to tackle challenges related to the institutional adoption of privacy-enhanced DeFi.
- Network-level privacy. Initiation of the Private RPC working group, integration of ORAM solutions and the Sphinx mixnet protocol, and development of private RPC nodes for browsers.
- TLSNotary and zkTLS. Enhancing the protocol for production deployment and developing an SDK for cross-platform integration.
- Private identity. Establishment of standards for zk-SNARKs, a modular ZKP wallet, and privacy-preserving credential revocation systems.
- Privacy experience (PX). Creation of unified interface and tooling standards for private applications.
The PSE team emphasizes that Ethereum must serve as the backbone of a digital economy that ensures privacy for transactions, data, and identities. The roadmap highlights a long-term dedication to zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), fully homomorphic encryption, and user-friendly solutions for both retail and institutional users.
The community seeks to embed privacy as a fundamental aspect of Ethereum’s architecture, guaranteeing not only technological progress but also adherence to global security and regulatory standards. It is noted that the proposed updates are part of a larger decade-long development strategy for the ecosystem.
