Additionally, Bank Al-Maghrib is exploring the feasibility of establishing a Central Bank Digital Currency (). Officials from the bank are particularly focused on the potential to enhance access to financial services for the populace.

In November 2017, Moroccan authorities enacted a nationwide prohibition on cryptocurrency transactions. Nevertheless, these restrictions did not notably diminish the extent of crypto usage, with a significant portion of the population possessing digital assets. Analysts indicated that over 900,000 Moroccan citizens held Bitcoin in 2021, which accounted for 2.4% of the nation’s total population. At that time, Morocco was at the forefront of North Africa in this regard.

In total, users from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region represented approximately 7.5% of the overall crypto transaction volume in the first half of 2024.
