MetaMask Addresses Allegations of Wallet Exploits: Report

Web3 wallet provider MetaMask has taken to Twitter to refute allegations that a “massive wallet-draining operation” stemmed from an exploit of its wallet.

This statement follows claims made by Taylor Mohanan, who stated that an attacker was “sending” transactions through MetaMask, siphoning crypto from long-time users and employees. Mohanan, who is also a developer for MetaMask, later clarified that the attack was not specific to MetaMask.

• The “sophisticated” theft was initially identified by Monahan earlier this week. In her original post, she noted that the attack led to the loss of over 5,000 ETH and an unspecified amount of tokens and NFTs since December 2022.
• The attacker intentionally targeted “OGs who are reasonably secure,” according to Monahan’s assessment, which also mentioned that the location of the exploit remains unidentified.
• In a series of tweets, MetaMask affirmed that its platform had not been compromised in any manner.

“Recent reporting on (Monahan’s) thread has inaccurately asserted that a massive wallet-draining operation is due to a MetaMask exploit. This is incorrect. This is not a MetaMask-specific exploit.”

• The wallet provider further stated that its security team is collaborating with affected wallet providers throughout the industry to identify the source.
• It indicated that the attacker withdrew 5,000 ETH from various addresses across 11 blockchains, rather than solely from its platform users.
• While details regarding the hacker’s techniques remain vague, the wallet keys of all victims were generated between 2014 and 2022.
