The Linux Foundation, a non-profit consortium focused on the advancement of operating systems utilizing the Linux kernel, introduced the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT), an entity dedicated to promoting decentralized technologies. Its primary objective is to cultivate ecosystems centered around blockchain, distributed ledgers (DLT), digital identity, cryptography, and other open source advancements.

The fund was co-established by over 100 representatives from diverse companies. This initiative receives backing from 13 prominent organizations, including:

  • software firms AYANWORKS, Print2Block, Dfns, Serviço Federal de Processamento de Dados (SERPRO), and Ownera;
  • Dhiway, a provider of solutions for the storage and management of verifiable credentials;
  • Exponential Science Foundation (EFS), a non-profit previously known as the DLT Science Foundation;
  • blockchains Hashgraph, Polygon, Rayls, and Wanchain;
  • Banco Central do Brasil (BCB);
  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global IT consulting company.

The foundation is building upon the efforts of the Hyperledger Foundation and the Trust Over IP Foundation. The LFDT employs Hedera’s open-source code and consensus mechanism, alongside innovations from Hyperledger Fabric 3.0 and Hyperledger Identus. Digital trust management within the LFDT is facilitated by Trust Over IP and Lockness, a key management technology developed by Dfns.

As stated by Daniela Barbosa, General Manager of Distributed Technologies at the Linux Foundation and Executive Director of the LFDT, the fund was established to encourage projects that create reliable and secure systems within the digital economy. She highlighted that the foundation’s core mission is to guarantee transparency, dependability, and efficiency of technologies on a global scale.

In Q2 2024, the count of daily unique active wallets (dUAW) reached approximately 10 million, reflecting a 40% rise compared to 2023.
